Thirty years have passed since Rosa Tenazas excavated Iron Age burial jars from the Magsuhot Site near Dumaguete, Negros Oriental. The site overlooks the Bohol Sea from the broad slopes at the base of Magaso, or Cuernos de Negros, Volcano. Tenazas, Lionel Chong and others have visited or worked at the site, and Roly Mascunana produced exquisite line drawings of burial jars and other artifacts from the site.
Unfortunately, none of the work has ever been published. Tenazas' project, which resulted in her Ph.D. dissertation in 1974, is a state-of-the-art archaeological investigation from the early 1970s, and Mascunana's illustrations document many of the zoo- and anthropomorphic ceramics from the site.
The University of San Carlos Publications has offered to publish a book
including both Tenazas and Mascunana's work, with an introduction by Dr.
John Peterson and a foreword by Dr. Wilhelm Solheim. This work will be
a significant contribution in Philippines Iron Age archaeology, especially
since it documents an open-air Iron Age site. Solheim's pioneering work
from the 1950s was recently republished by the University of the Philippines
at Dilliman. The Magsuhot volume would contribute an invaluable companion
to his earlier work from rock shelters and coastal sites throughout the
Central Visayas.
USC Publications has requested $2,000 for subvention costs for the volume.
Contributions can be sent to IARII, which is a 501(c)3 non-profit corporation.
