Our most recent project is also our largest in American
Samoa. IARII conducted field survey, detailed mapping, controlled excavations,
archival and oral historical research, and construction monitoring for
the ASPA (American Samoa Power Authority) sewer collections development
in Tualauta County of Tutuila Island.
IARII
personnel examined an intricate overlay of numerous walls and terraces,
indicating multiple periods of repeated occupation and restructuring of
the landscape.
Our research documented pottery associated with ancient
residences, at least 1000 years old, in the lower hill slopes of the villages
of Pava`ia`i, Faleniu, and Malae`imi.
Field
assistants Jeffrey Toloa (left) and Sakaria Aneki (right) helped to sift
thousands of liters of excavated sediment to recover traces of their Samoan
heritage.
Mike T. Carson,
Ph.D., has been responsible for
IARII's recent archaeological work in American Samoa.
